Ghana to Witness a Positive Spur in Telecom, Mobile and Broadband Sectors: Ken Research

Ghana is one of the first countries in Africa to deregulate and liberalize its telecommunication sector. Import duty on mobile services had been reintroduced by Ghana's government. Mobile, internet and fixed line sector increased rapidly, after privatization of Ghana Telecom in 1996. The privatization was done by providing license to new players so that they offer services.
According to the report, “Ghana - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses”, there had been a reduction in cost of access to broadband services after the arrival of two submarine fiber optic cables in 2012 and 2013 and also the international bandwidth significantly increased after this arrival. Currently, Vodafone Group has been the second largest player in the mobile services segment and it is the principal fixed line provider and owner of Ghana Telecom. Even, Westel has prolonged to be the member of one of the leading mobile operators in Africa. Provision of access to ISP's on a cheaper rate on wholesale basis by Google is being done. Also Google has to build a fibre network that covers major cities. National fiber backbone networks, combined by other development will continue to revolutionize the countries broadband market by numerous players to pave way to technologies and services.
In Africa, the most vibrant mobile network market has been Ghana regional MTN, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel and Millicom formely Zain and Tigo which are the top most competitive operators. By the late 2015, an increase in the subscriber growth and lower average revenue per user due to extensive competition was noticed. Therefore, it gets difficult to analyze regular revenue growth by a particular operator. Anyway, there is growth in mobile data ARPU and subscriber addition in voice market with enormous potential in mobile broadband services. A wide variety of internet connection is accounted by mobile broadband and the future for the same is bright as well.
Ghana being the first country to get connected with internet in Africa and launch DSL services as well has been very competitive but most of the subscribers are of some specific players. Earlier there was poor connectivity to internet with slow speed in national fixed line network with high cost as well. But after the introduction of 3G mobile and wireless broadband technology like HSPA and WiMAX, there has been an increase in the speed as well as more convenience is being offered to customers that is helping in the increasing the customer base.
In eastern and western corridors, the government has invested in building fibre infrastructure. By expanding the retail and wholesale offering, the reprivatized national carrier, Ghana Telecom has been effective in driving the broadband market as well. In the years to come, Ghana is sure to proliferate in all sectors majorly in mobile and broadband with ameliorating processes and procedures.
