Data Centre market in Malaysia has been supported by the exceptional efforts made by the Federal Government of Malaysia under the Economic Transformation Programme to promote the country as a leading hub for data centre services in Asia.
The rising demand for data centre services by SMB’s along with substantial increase in demand for cloud computing services will lead the growth of the Malaysian data centre market in the upcoming years.
The Malaysian economy is gradually transforming itself to be counted amongst the list of developed nations across the world. To fulfill this objective, the government launched the Economic Transformation Programme.  Under this programme apart from other initiatives, the government wishes to transform the country as a hub for data centre (DC) services across the globe. The government has provided DC companies with various incentives to encourage them to setup data centres in Malaysia. The focused approach towards the proliferation of the data centre industry and development of the supporting infrastructure will instill growth in the future. The number of companies entering the market has increased in the last 5 years. The total number of data centres has also increased in the country as there are multiple investments made by the data centre (DC) companies for future projects.
There are investments made by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDeC) to establish Data Park in Iskandar, Johor which will act as a catalyst for the market in future. A major hurdle in the development of the market is the rising operational costs, of which the major component is bandwidth and power cost. With the entry of newer players and expansion of the existing players, the increase in competition in the market is likely to put pressure on co-location services price in the future. However, the likely increase in number of international clients in the future is expected to instill growth.
Ken Research in its latest study “Malaysia Data Centre Market Outlook to 2022 - by Revenue Streams (Colocation, Managed Hosting and Cloud Services), by End Users (Banking & Finance, Federal Government, Content & Technology and Others)”, suggests that the data centre market in Malaysia will grow at a CAGR of 17% (2017-2022) owing to the rise in number of international customers, support and incentives provided by the government and the increasing number of data centres in the country.
