Technological Developments in Norway Telecom Sector: Ken Research

With higher development taking place in mobile and broadband penetration rates and higher developed digital media sector, Norway has a dynamic telecom market in common with other Scandinavian countries. With relevant EC legislation, Norway telecom sector has been synchronized. There is an increase in competition between existing players and newly entered players. Despite all this, Telenor has been the dominant operator in all the sectors in the country. Some operators have been incorporating and unitedly increasing its market share. For example- Telia Sonera increased its market share by acquiring Tele 2 and in March 2016, it has remained its local division Netcom as Telia. On the other hand, Telio is now incorporated by Next Gen Tel Holding.
According to the report, “Norway - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses”, the penetration of broadband in Norway has been the highest rate in Europe. Therefore, migration to superfast broadband services has been provided by the fire network that took place with efforts of telco and government of the country. It has been upgraded to superfast VDSL and cable infrastructure. In the end of 2016, G.Fast technology has been observed being introduced by leading ISP's Telenor and Next Gen Tel with a view to commercial launch of services.
In March 2016, Telenor mobil and Telia Sonera's have rebranded Telia division, and dominated the mobile market in the country. In December 2013, Tele 2 went through a failure to secure spectrum at auction and sold its Norwegian operations. Before the failure of Tele 2, it was a part owner of joint venture mobile Norway. Due to the failure of Tele 2, Ice.net an operator owned by AINMT Holdings was benefited by securing spectrum at auction and also gained network Norway's customer base as a part of the deal enforced by the telecom regulator. With the growing number of NVNO's, voice and data services were supplemented by these operators.
With Telenor as well as Telia spearheading networking, the network has been well advanced in LTE developments in the region. In the future years till 2020 and 2025, both the operators will decide to close down their 2G and 3G networks and will focus on 5G forth coming technologies instead to LTE development. It will also provide voice using VoLTE to consumers. To about 1.5 million Norwegians, Telia offers a LTE which will provide service of 300 Mb/s. As a precursor to 5G, it has also achieved 1 GB data rate using quad-band carrier aggregation technology.
In Norway, Telenor is the incumbent telecom operator and has an experience of more than 150 years. Fixed-line and mobile telephony, broadband, TV and Datacom services are included in Telenor's service portfolio. About 3.1 million mobile subscriptions in Norway, 86% of subscriptions were a contract which included SMS, data and voice in 2016. It is the leading provider of mobile communication in Norway. With the persistent steps taken by the stable as well as this leading company especially, all these sectors are bound to register huge revenues in the coming future.
