Will Automated Cold Storage be the Future Success Factors for Philippines Frozen Storage Industry: Ken Research

Demand for cold storages, especially frozen storage pallets in the Philippines offering a temperature range of -10C to -40C is on a rise like never before. Rising consumption of meat, seafood, ice-creams and processed frozen foods such as patties, fries, and nuggets among the millennial population have been some of the key growth drivers for the industry. Accompanied by the steady growth in demand for these products, the country continues to experience high food wastage while storage in the value chain, indicating increasing investment required for improving frozen storage infrastructure in the nation.
Nationwide Shortage of Frozen Storage Pallets resulting in Food Wastage
In 2019, as much as 26.3 million kgs of additional food were estimated to be wasted in the Philippines in comparison with its Southeast Asian counterparts such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It was also identified that the Philippines required more than 300,000 frozen storage pallets last year to meet the frozen food consumption levels in the country; a figure only projected to rise if increasing investments are not made in the frozen storage sector. Despite the existence of leading companies such as Jentec Cold Storage, Glacier Mega fridge and Big Blue Logistics which have been in the business for more than a decade in the space and operate high pallet capacity, the country continues to experience a shortage in frozen storage pallets.

Are Automated Cold Storages Really the Answer?
Several cold and freezer storage companies in the Philippines have now begun focusing on transforming their existing cold storage facilities to fully automated profit centres through technological interventions such as ASRS, WMS, and RFID. For a country witnessing exorbitantly high levels of food wastage in comparison with the neighbouring nations and acute shortage of pallet capacity, focusing only on increasing the pallet position becomes the prime concern. However, the industry is also witnessing rising competition owing to the emergence of new players and existing players increasing their current pallet capacity. The increasing competition is projected to result in the maturity of the market by 2035. Thus, in an increasingly competitive sector where every additional value-added service count, automation in cold storage facilities is projected to become the major competition strategy for frozen storage companies in the future.
