Increasing Demand to Bolster Asia Drag Reducing Agent for Oil & Gas Industry: Ken Research

Drag reduction is defined as the increase in pumpability of a fluid caused by the addition of small amounts of an additive to the flowing stream. Drag-reducing agents (DRA) are also known as drag-reducing polymers (DRP's) which are added as additives in pipelines that reduce turbulence in a pipe. They are usually used in petroleum pipelines as they increase the pipeline capacity by reducing turbulency and allow oil to flow more efficiently. Drag reducing agents are used in shipbuilding industry, for fire-fighting operations, oil-well fracturing processes, in irrigation systems, in central heating devices, in crude oil operations, refined products and non-potable water. However, several studies are ongoing to implement if drag reducers can help with blood flow in human systems.

Drag reducing agent additive function as a fluidifier additive within the crude oil mass by positively altering the frictional pressure occurring in a pipeline or other conduit attached. These agents in the crude oil mass modify the thixotropic characteristics of the crude oil mass to achieve a more favourable kinematic viscosity without altering the initial composition of the crude oil mass. This is known as the process of fluidification by molecular dispersion. Drag reducing agents reduce the turbulence induced drag in the pipeline of the crude oil mass and rearrange the bonds between atoms in the crude oil without altering the inherent properties of the crude oil. This decreases pressure in the pipeline resulting in a higher flow stream at the same pressure. This is a new approach in chemistry as the alteration in the bonds between the atoms within the crude oil creates an energy demand which is recovered by the energy previously lost in the region of the turbulent flow.

According to the study “Asia Drag Reducing Agent for Oil & Gas Industry Situation and Prospects Research Report”, High Viscosity Glue, Low Viscosity Glue and Rubber Latex are the various product types available in drag reducing agent for oil & gas in Asia market. Geographically, drag reducing agent for oil & gas in Asia market is spread across China, Japan, India, Korea, Saudi Arabia and other region. The leading players in drag reducing agent for oil & gas in Asia market are LSPI, Flowchem, Baker Hughes, Innospec, Oil Flux Americas, NuGenTec, Sino Oil King Shine Chemical, DESHI, Qflo, Superchem Technology, The Zoranoc Oilfield Chemical and CNPC.

Drag reducing agent in crude oil mass interacts with  varying properties of different crude oil mass such as the type of crude oil (asphaltic or paraffinic, etc.), composition and pH of the water, temperature, extent of compression by pressure, dissolved gas, contact time, and concentration of polar molecules. The drag reducing agents facilitates the uniform and continuous flow of the crude oil mass to prevent clogged production wells, flow stream processes, prevent interruption of the production and flow stream delivery or renewed production of inactive wells.

Drag reducing agent works as pressure and temperature indicator in pipeline or conduit, the drag reducing agent does not evaporate because it incorporates into crude oil mass, it lowers operating costs, environmentally safe, and produces crude oil profit at lower costs. It was observed that there is sufficient ongoing crude exploration and extraction within the energy sector adopting low-cost supplies. The increasing demand and growing population needs for oil and gas will drive the growth in drag reducing agents in Asian markets over the next few years.
