A commutator is an electrical switch that is used in electric motors & electric generators. It reverses the direction of current between the external circuit and the rotor. The commutator is an important part of the armature of the DC motor and the AC commutator motor, and it plays an important switching function in rotating the motor. It consists of a cylinder made-up of a series of metal contact segments in the rotary armature switch. Two or more fixed electrical contacts, called brushes, made of a flexible, carbon-like conductor press against the commutator and, as it rotates, make sliding-contact with successive segments of the commutator. The windings on the armature (framework) are basically connected to the commutator segments.
Switches are widely used in varied
sectors including aerospace and power generation sectors. Switches also have a
number of household uses, along with automotive spending. The switches are an
integral part of the electric motor and thus drive our everyday life. Two
copper segments with a thin layer of mica insulation are usually used to
manufacture switches. It also acts as a mechanical rectifier. Commutators are
widely used in direct motors around the world, semiconductor commutators are
also used in brushless DC motors.

and development, agreements, product breadth and breadth, and collaborations in
order to gain market share.
Based on types, commutator market can be segregated as groove commutator and hook. In addition, based on applications, market can be segregated as automatic industry, power tools, household appliances and others.
Introduction of new products,
followed by increase in competition, growth in spending in the automotive
industry and increase in use of commutator are some major factors, which are responsible
for growth of the commutator market. Apart from this, high cost of commutator
is a major restraining factor for market.
Based on regional analysis, the
Asia-Pacific is a leading region in global commutator market owing to increase
in spending on household appliances industry, and different scales of
development in urbanization & industrialization across the region. The
North-America and Europe regions are estimated to witness higher growth rate
due to increase in launches in introducing new products over the forecast
period. It is projected that future of the global commutator market will be
bright on account of growth of auto industry expenditures coupled with
retrofitting & renovation of old technology during the forecast period.
