Vietnam Cold Chain Industry will be Driven by Growth in Cold Storage and Transport Capacity Backed by Increase in Number of Convenience Stores and Mini Marts: Ken Research

The restaurants, shopping malls and supermarkets have supported the demand for transport of refrigerated transport as well as storage in the country. Furthermore, the trend of young Vietnamese preferring to purchase from supermarkets rather than the wet fish markets has been on the rise owing to the consumers attaining to the factors such as quality and cleanliness in the supermarkets. This trend has increased the demand of cold storage and transport services in the country
The report titled “Vietnam Cold Chain Market by Cold Storage and Cold Transport, Product Type (Bakery, Confectionary, Dairy, Meat & SeaFood, Vaccines & Pharmaceutical, Fruits & Vegetables, Chemicals) – Outlook to 2021” by Ken Research suggested a positive CAGR of 10.4% in terms of total cold chain revenue in the next 5 years till 2021.
Cold storage demand in Vietnam is high which has attributed 50% occupancy rate at nearly all facilities. Capacity has quadrupled over the past 10 years, but most facilities are used by the seafood export industry rather than for domestic consumption. The cold chain companies have been increasing their cold storage capacity over the years and various companies are planning to increase it in future due to the growing cold chain market in the country. The demand for cold storage and transport systems have increased over the years with rising pharmaceutical industry and frozen and processed food industry. The construction of a Cold Storage Warehouse in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by CLK Cold Storage Company Limited in 2016 can be stated as an example. It is a JV established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line), Cool Japan Fund Inc. (Cool Japan) and Japan Logistic Systems Corp. (Japan Logistic Systems).
The restaurants, shopping malls and supermarkets have supported the demand for transport of refrigerated transport as well as storage in the country. In recent years, the super marts and mini marts have become popular amongst the Vietnamese. This can be advocated from the fact that there were 1,500 convenience stores across the country and this number is expected to increase in the future. In addition to this, there are 1,300 new supermarket and 350 trade centers that are in the pipeline for 2020 in the country. The modern retail trade concept has grown improved from being only two supermarkets in HCM. To support this growing demand, ABA Cooltrans hopes to put itself at the forefront of Vietnam’s cold chain expansion. The company’s 200 reefer trucks handled 54,000 tonnes in 2016, and a newly acquired 15,000 pallet-capacity cold storage facility in Hanoi saw throughput of 100,000 tonnes.
The major players in Vietnam cold chain market include Kuehne Nagel, Swire Cold Storage, Preferred Freezer Services, Schenker, Agility, APL, K-Line, Maersk Logistics, CLK Logistics, Panasato, Sojitz and Kokubu, Konoike Vina, Mekong logistics, Hung Vong and Lotte Logistics.
