Bag-in-Box (BIB) containers or packings are designed to extend the shelf life of liquid or semi-liquid food products and are used as a convenient packaging solution for industrial products. They are made up of corrugated cardboard or solid board. The outer box provides protection during transportation and high quality printed packs use colour or graphics to attract consumer attention in the retail environment. Initially, BiB containers were designed to handle acid from car batteries. However, later they were used in the diary industry followed by wine industry and later food industries. Today, BiB containers are used for a multitude of products, both food and non-food, in all possible sizes, multiplying the number of packaging possibilities for liquid and semi-liquid products.
According to the study “Asia BiB Container Industry Situation and Prospects Research report”, every BiB container is specifically designed and constructed to preserve the exact liquid inside to avoid contamination by the air outside. Liquid inside the BiB container is dispensed through a tap which prevents air from entering the packaging during dispensing. The BiB container and tap work together to prolong the shelf life of the liquid before and after use. Bag-in-Box (BiB) containers are constructed with maximize storage space and to minimize transport costs. The standard sizes of BiB available are from 2 to 1000 litres of liquid volume, possess multi-layered bag to meet specific product requirements, tamper proof design to reduce oxygen permeation, high quality materials used in manufacturing, and fully or semi-automatic operating BiB’s. These containers extends shelf life of products after opening, minimizes product waste due to the improved shelf life, consumer friendly as BiB is easy to carry, store and use and environmentally friendly because it has lower carbon footprint than plastic or glass alternatives.
BiB containers occupy less space during storage or transportation and are also used for food products such as chocolate paste and convenient for filling and discharge of products. Bag-in-Box container liners are embedded with compressed air ducts which are pressed between the inner bag and the outer shell to ensure 100% emptying of the product. It is also used in storage or as dispensers of wines, alcohols, juice, compotes, syrups, soups, oils, dairy products, eggs, liquids, water and products from many other non-food industries, including detergents, cosmetic products, inks, fertilizers, paints, chemicals and glue products.
Low density polyethylene (LDPE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and others are the various types of BiB containers available in Asia. Various applications of BiB containers in Asia are in food & beverages, chemical & material, household products, liquid foods, chemicals and households, cosmetics and toiletries and others. Geographically, BiB containers market in Asia is spread across China, India, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and other regions. The leading players in Asia’s BiB container industry are Scholle Packaging, DuPont, CDF Corporation, DS Smith, Smurfit Kappa, Arlington Packaging, Smurfit Kappa Group, Hedwin Division of Zacros America, Accurate Box Company Inc., Central Package and Display, Reusable Transport Packaging, CDS Manufacturing, TricorBraun, Multi-Pak USA, AUER Packaging, Scholle IPN, Amcor Limited, Liqui-Box, Vitavel JSC, Vine Valley Ventures LLC, TPS Rental Systems Ltd, and Parish Manufacturing Inc.
Various BiB conatines are designed to meet the specific needs of each liquid, whether food or non-food. BiB’s are watertight, flexible, light and easy to use which are versatile, top-performance packings. BIB containers reduce the amount of waste, packing and save money on transport and storage because there is practically no danger of breakage. These containers meet all hygienic standards for using food and non-food products with outstanding hygienic conditions, from packaging to consumption. All food and non-food liquids using BiB’s provides ease of use, long conservation, and reduced investment.
Bag-in-Box containers and pouches are eco-friendly, lightweight and allow space optimisation for transport and storage. Bag-in-Box containers is a revolution in packaging industry which has a capacity of 100 liters, possesses ingenious compressed air system, has a complete residual emptying option, and can be used for products with a very high viscosity. Modernization and industrialization to bolster BiB container industry in Asia over the next few years
