“Due to the government policies and dominance of
international players, the logistics and warehousing market of Uganda has
experienced a low growth rate in 2017/18”.
Analysts
at Ken Research in their
latest publication “Uganda
Logistics and Warehousing Market Outlook to 2022/23 – By Rail, Land, Air Freight Forwarding; International and Domestic
Freight, Integrated and Contract Logistics Freight Forwarding, By warehousing
(Industrial / Retail, Container Freight / Inland Container Depot and Cold
Storage), By Courier and Parcel” believe that the Logistics and warehousing Market of Uganda has
experienced low growth due to the underdeveloped infrastructure. The government
should invest in infrastructure specifically in road since it is a landlocked
country in order to improve the trade scenario and help the market grow.
Establishments of industrial/business parks: Uganda
Investment Authority (UIA) has rolled out a plan to build six new industrial
and business parks in Jinja, Nakasongola, Arua, Buliisa, Gulu and Lira
districts in 2017/18. Increase in the industrial and business parks create an
opportunity for the development of warehouses and therefore, boosted the Uganda
warehousing market in the review period (2013-18).
Emergence of Crowd Sourcing Model: Crowd sourced
delivery model has gained popularity over the years and many startups have
emerged to cater to the on- demand faster delivery services to the end users.
For instance, GetBoda, a delivery company in Uganda, uses a crowd sourced model
which connects multiple boda boda riders, track and van drivers, with third
party logistics companies into a single network that is accessible using mobile
phone and web application called GetBoda.
Technological advancements: The freight forwarding companies are focusing on technologies
that would help them keep a track of the cargo being transported preventing the
loss of cargo and allowing timely delivery of products. Asycuda World is an online portal which helps
keep a track of all the sea cargo which is unloaded at Mombasa and brought to
the country by road. Warehousing companies use different warehouse management
systems to improve their operating efficiency while courier and parcel
companies use technology like tracking systems to offer real time tracking to
its customers. These technological advancements have improved the services and
hence, boosted the revenue for the sector in the country.
Growth of e-commerce
sector: With the advent of
digitization, there has been a growth in the number of e- commerce players namely
as in the country to cater the demand of the end users. The growth in
e-commerce sector has not only boosted the growth for warehousing market in
Uganda but also has provided new revenue stream to the courier and parcel
operators. For instance, Jumia Uganda has partnered up with DHL and Aramex in
2017/18 for express deliveries across the country.
