Cocamido
propyl hydroxyl sultaine (CAHS) is a synthetic amphoteric surfactant, derived
from fatty acid of coconut oil. Sodium bisulfite and Epichlorohydrin are
reacted to fatty acids (Lauric acid) from coconut oil to get CAHS. It is a pure
liquid, with a mild or characteristic odor. Its pH is from 6.5 to 8 (5% aqueous
solution). It has various groups in its structure, which can counter the other
ions form other constituents and react with them to form a stable product. CAHS is mainly used to improve product
appearance or quality & stability. It acts as a conditioner, foaming agent,
surfactant, anti-static agent, and thickener. As a mild surfactant, it
moderately cleanses the skin or hair and helps deliver other ingredients
contained in a product, particularly cleansing and moisturizing ones. It is
found in hundreds of products, including foam bath lotion, shampoos, facial
cleansers, personal hygiene products and baby washing products. The key
advantages are included low content of inorganic salts, chloroacetic acid
impurities and less irritation.
