India Untreated Mosquito Nets Market, India Untreated Mosquito Nets Industry: Ken Research

How is the Untreated Mosquito Nets Market Positioned in India?

Mosquito nets is a method of mosquito repellence used in India, mostly in the states with low electricity penetration, power cuts, low per capita income, high rainfall and moist climate. Untreated mosquito nets are made out of a mesh-type fabric which is fine enough to prevent mosquitoes, flies and ticks from penetrating but providing sufficient ventilation and not obscuring visibility.

Preventable diseases by use of mosquito nets include malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, zika virus and other vector-borne diseases. A mesh size of 1.2 mm prevents mosquitoes and smaller size such as 0.6 mm, stops other biting insects such as biting midges. However, mosquito net is mainly used against the malaria transmitting vector, anopheles gambiae.

To achieve malaria-free country by 2027 and elimination by 2030, National Strategic Plan (NSP) 2017-22 for Malaria Elimination has been developed by National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. Free distribution of mosquito nets has been an important measure to achieve this objective. Mosquito nets in India come under the Hometech segment of technical textiles. It is a highly fragmented market wherein it is impracticable to distinguish manufacturers from distributors because the value chain of the product is simplistic.

Sale of untreated mosquito nets is higher in tier II & III cities whereas adoption in urban areas is low due to other substitutes with better efficacy such as vaporizers, coils and rackets. Hanging mosquito nets is averse to aesthetics of urban houses and people use it mostly for infants.

How is India Untreated Mosquito Nets Market Segmented?

By Nature of Business (Unorganized and Organized)

Production of untreated mosquito nets is a labor intensive industry, an unorganized and fragmented market.  Due to presence of big manufacturers with high turnover in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities such as Surat, Ahmadabad and Delhi, the share of unorganized sector has been decreasing marginally over the years.

By Product Type/Structure (Framed/Foldable and Hanging)

Mosquito nets are mainly of two types: framed/foldable nets and hanging nets, the latter contributing a larger share in market revenues.

By Material Used (HDPE & Polyester, Nylon and Cotton)

HDPE is the least expensive fabric used for production of mosquito nets, cotton being the most expensive. Cotton is mostly used for baby nets.

By Size of Bed (Double Bed and Single Bed)

Double bed nets cover king size, queen size, California king size, super king size and others ideal for use of 2 adults at a time. Single bed nets cover single beds, infant cradles, manjis, charpaayi and other such movable bed structures in India.

By Regional Clusters (North India, South India, West India, East India and Central India)

Northeast India is a major demand hotspot for untreated mosquito nets, whereas South India accounts for most of the production.

By Distribution Channels (Offline and Online)

Untreated mosquito nets are mainly sold in kirana stores but off late a small online market segment has sprung up, offering higher retail margins and is expected to further witness growth in future.

How is The Competitive Landscape of the India Untreated Mosquito Nets Market?

Major production clusters in India include Karur, Surat, Ahmadabad, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. The market is highly fragmented and unorganized. However, due to presence of big manufacturers with high turnover in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities such as Surat, Ahmadabad and Delhi, the share of unorganized sector has been decreasing marginally. Large scale manufacturers such as Riddhi Mosquito Nets and Gyasi Ram & Associates have a significantly large export base in Africa. Small local manufacturers supply either in the same city or in states with high demand such as Orissa, Bihar, and northeastern states of India. Mosquito nets, being a very niche product were mostly sold at local mom and pop stores in the past. Off late, a small online business for sale of untreated mosquito nets has sprung up, causing a disruption in the market in Tier I cities which could result in higher product acceptability in these markets in future.
