India holds an important place in the global education industry and has one of the largest networks of higher education institutions in the world. However, there is still a lot of potential for further development in the education system. Moreover, the aim of the Government to raise its current gross enrolment ratio will also boost the growth of distance education in India. The country has the world’s largest population of about 500 million in the age bracket of 5-24 years, which provides a great opportunity for the education sector. The number of colleges and universities in India reached 39,931 and 993, respectively, in FY’19. India had 37.4 million students enrolled in higher education in FY’19. Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education reached 26.3% during the same year.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the education of the sector, accelerating the shift to digital-learning models as educational institutes remain closed in the wake of the virus outbreak. As classroom sessions are no longer feasible during the lockdown, educational institutions have taken the help of a digital medium. Most private schools in urban India started to offer online classes that supported student-teacher interaction on a real-time basis. Unfortunately, government-aided schools and low-fee category educational institutions have limited resources and could not offer the same quality of digital-learning options.
The lockdown also brought attention to some of India's leading educational technology start-ups that began providing free access to their learning platforms. Top ed-tech start-ups witnessed steep surges in demand for their content with a leading ed-tech app from India becoming one of the world's top 10 education apps by the number of downloads during the lockdown phase.
