Growth of
four wheeler vehicle sales: The growth
has fed into the aftermarket, with the country now being home to one of
Africa’s largest vehicle fleets with around six million vehicles on the
country’s roads, with the majority – approximately 5.0 million – being
passenger cars. New vehicle sales in Egypt have recently grown, currently
standing at more than 200,000 units per year. Around half of this figure is
assembled locally. Egypt is home to notable local vehicle assemblers like GB
Auto, General Motors Egypt / Mansour Automotive, and Nissan.
Government
Support to promote Green Energy: The
government of Egypt announced an initiative to encourage consumers to replace
old vehicles for new ones operating on CNG engines with extended credit
facilities among its green program incentives. The share of CNG-powered
vehicles is increasing further, which will open up new industry segments and
growth opportunities for the aftermarket in Egypt.
Rise of
E-Commerce Channel for Aftermarket: A growing
trend has been observed in the Egyptian aftermarket in the e-commerce channel,
with platforms such as Odiggo, Tawfiqia and Egyparts gaining visibility among
the public. The Egyptian aftermarket is ripe for growth and to offer up great
opportunities for parts producers, distributors, and service providers, local
producers, suppliers, etc.
Change in
Installment Rates by Central Bank of Egypt: The Central Bank of Egypt, during the year 2020, decided to raise the
maximum installment allowed from a customer's total fixed income to 50% from
the existing 40%. This made it easier to acquire loans and hence, led to more
car purchases. Banks have taken initiatives to ease procedures for car loans,
various offers are made by car dealers, and the government has launched
older-vehicle replacement and conversion initiative.
Zero Tariff
on Cars: There exists zero tariff on cars
from the European Union, under the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade) agreement. The agreement stipulates establishing a free trade area in
the span of a transitional period of 12 years from the date of enforcement. It
also liberalizes the Egyptian imports of industrial goods with European origins
for up to 16 years. Egypt implemented the trade cooperation agreement with the
European Union in 2010, so European Car customs began to decline.
International
Economic Agreements: Due to a
number of international economic agreements having been signed by Egypt, there
has been a negative effect on the country's car manufacturing industry. The
agreements led to an increase in the sales volume of imported cars which
benefit from customs exemption. The sales volume of European-origin cars
increased from 11% in 2018 to almost 20% in 2019.
