Uganda Logistics and Warehousing Market is boosted by the emergence of e-commerce sector and increase in the infrastructural developments: Ken Research

“Due to the government policies and dominance of international players, the logistics and warehousing market of Uganda has experienced a low growth rate in 2017/18”.

Analysts at Ken Research in their latest publicationUganda Logistics and Warehousing Market Outlook to 2022/23 – By Rail, Land, Air Freight Forwarding; International and Domestic Freight, Integrated and Contract Logistics Freight Forwarding, By warehousing (Industrial / Retail, Container Freight / Inland Container Depot and Cold Storage), By Courier and Parcelbelieve that the Logistics and warehousing Market of Uganda has experienced low growth due to the underdeveloped infrastructure. The government should invest in infrastructure specifically in road since it is a landlocked country in order to improve the trade scenario and help the market grow.

Establishments of industrial/business parks:  Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) has rolled out a plan to build six new industrial and business parks in Jinja, Nakasongola, Arua, Buliisa, Gulu and Lira districts in 2017/18. Increase in the industrial and business parks create an opportunity for the development of warehouses and therefore, boosted the Uganda warehousing market in the review period (2013-18).

Emergence of Crowd Sourcing Model: Crowd sourced delivery model has gained popularity over the years and many startups have emerged to cater to the on- demand faster delivery services to the end users. For instance, GetBoda, a delivery company in Uganda, uses a crowd sourced model which connects multiple boda boda riders, track and van drivers, with third party logistics companies into a single network that is accessible using mobile phone and web application called GetBoda.

Technological advancements: The freight forwarding companies are focusing on technologies that would help them keep a track of the cargo being transported preventing the loss of cargo and allowing timely delivery of products.  Asycuda World is an online portal which helps keep a track of all the sea cargo which is unloaded at Mombasa and brought to the country by road. Warehousing companies use different warehouse management systems to improve their operating efficiency while courier and parcel companies use technology like tracking systems to offer real time tracking to its customers. These technological advancements have improved the services and hence, boosted the revenue for the sector in the country.

Growth of e-commerce sector: With the advent of digitization, there has been a growth in the number of e- commerce players namely as in the country to cater the demand of the end users. The growth in e-commerce sector has not only boosted the growth for warehousing market in Uganda but also has provided new revenue stream to the courier and parcel operators. For instance, Jumia Uganda has partnered up with DHL and Aramex in 2017/18 for express deliveries across the country.

The report covers various aspects including introduction of Latin America seed industry and Brazil seed market, value chain analysis, market size by revenue and production volume, overall Brazil seed market segmentation by type of seeds, by international and domestic players; and by region; comparative landscape, trends and developments, issues and challenges, SWOT analysis and regulatory framework of the industry. The report concludes with market projections for future and analyst recommendations highlighting major opportunities and cautions for the Brazil seed industry.

Brazil Seed Market Overview and Size
Steady growth was observed in Brazilian agriculture majorly due to increased levels of production and exporting of crops such as soybean, sugarcane, wheat and corn, among others. In addition to that, technological advancement and improved seeds have played a key role in increasing productivity and agricultural development. In Brazil, a dynamic seed industry is evident with the participation of the both private and state sectors in R&D through the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). The country is one of the largest agricultural exporters with agro-food exports accounting for 38.5% of the total exports value, compared with 7.3% across all countries in the year 2018. Seed market within Brazil was observed to grow at a positive CAGR both in terms of revenue and production volume during the review period of 5 years 2013-2018.

Brazil Seed Market Segmentation
By International and Domestic Players: Numerous companies have international profiles and seek to exploit the Brazilian seed market. This is often done so that the international companies acquire local companies thus, leading to a higher share in the year 2018. One of the great advantages of Brazil as compared to other developing countries is the existence of several different research institutions in the agricultural and human health sectors, qualified to act as vectors for the development of modern biotechnology such as EMBRAPA. Hence, foreign companies find it easy to acquire or merge with already established companies in order to reduce the administration and transaction costs in Brazil.

By Type of Seeds (Vegetable and Non-Vegetable Seeds): Vegetable seeds include crops such as bitter gourd, cabbage, radish, cucumber, eggplant, hot pepper, leafy vegetables, onion, papaya, carrot, okra, pumpkin, ridge gourd, patola, sitao, snap bean, sweet corn, sweet pepper, tomato and watermelon. The market includes the domestic sales of locally produced seeds and imported seeds. In 2018, the major non-vegetable seeds being sold in Brazil were Soybean and Cotton. The industry offers different hybrids to farmers and helps them to achieve better productivity, now with lesser water. Thus, farmers can plant crops even when they may be facing situations such as drought or other similar conditions.

By Type of Vegetable Crop (Tomato Seeds, Watermelon and Other Melon Seeds, Onion Seeds, Potato Seeds, Chili Seeds and Others): Tomatoes in Brazil are processed into a wide variety of products including paste, pulp and other more specialized sauces. The segment has been growing at a positive CAGR and is majorly produced in Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goiás and other Central regions of Brazil. The remaining market share was collectively captured by watermelon, melon, onion, potato, chili seeds and others during the year 2018.

By Type of Technology (Hybrid and Open Pollinated) in Vegetable Seeds: Hybrid vegetable seeds have dominated in terms of revenue, generated by market players from the sales of various kinds of vegetable crop seeds in Brazil during 2018. Farmers generally prefer hybrid seed owing to better yield, higher resistance to diseases and various other features. Additionally, it was observed that major seed manufacturing companies are focusing on hybrid seeds in Brazil. The remaining market share was captured by open pollinated seeds in 2018.

By Type of Non-Vegetable Seeds (Soybean Seeds, Corn Seeds, Cotton Seeds and Others): Soybean seed segment dominated Brazil non-vegetable seed industry as the country was observed amongst the top three soybean producing nations in the world and produced 3.1 million tons during 2018. Bayer, Donmario, Syngenta, TMG, Corteva and BASF were the major producers of soybean seeds in Brazil. The remaining market share was captured by corn seeds, cotton seeds and others during 2018.

By Type of Technology (GMO, Hybrid and Open Pollinated Seeds) in Non-Vegetable Seeds: GMOs are the type of seeds that currently dominate the non-vegetable seeds market within Brazil in terms of revenue. These seeds have been manipulated by using bio-technology in order to increase their productivity, yield, resistance to disease or any other favorable such trait. The remaining market was collectively captured by other segments.

By Region (Bahia, Goias, Mato Grosso Do Sul, Mato Grosso, Parana, Rio Grande Do Sul and Others): Goias region established itself as market leader by region for most of these years. The region is well known for having many food-processing industries. The development of these industries is likely due to the high amount of cattle in the region. Since non-vegetable crops are used mostly as feed for cattle or poultry, it follows that the demand for the same would be high. Some of the major crops grown in the region include sugarcane, Tomato, Soybeans, Cotton and others. The remaining market share was collectively captured by Bahia, Mato Grosso Do Sul, Mato Grosso, Parana, Rio Grande Do Sul and others during the year 2018.

Comparative Landscape in Brazil Seeds Market
Competition stage within the Brazil Seeds market was observed to be concentrated along with the presence of both international as well as domestic players, where the international segment had larger revenue share during the year 2018. There are multiples players (including foreign and domestic/local) operating within the country as of 2018. Competition prevailing in the market was primarily due to providing almost similar types of seeds by multiple players. Other parameters on the basis of which companies compete in the Brazil seed industry include technology, price, quality, distribution network, range of products and others.

Brazil Seeds Market Future Outlook and Projections
The demand for seeds within Brazil is further expected to be driven primarily by the strategies of different international companies who are planning to expand their market share in Brazil during the forecast period 2019E-2023E. The emphasis on innovation, research and development through heavy investment especially in the crops of corn, soybean, tomato, melon, chili, onions and other major vegetable and non-vegetable crops is anticipated to support the revenues of the players offering seeds for producing crops in the Brazil region. Larger players cater to the growing requirements of farmers with improved qualities of GM, hybrid and open-pollinated seeds. The market in Brazil is also expected to gain consolidation as a number of mergers and acquisitions are taking place between large players in the country and abroad. The proportionate share of domestic players is further expected to decline, owing to rising numbers of farmers shifting to the use of branded seeds with improved quality to get better yield, which is usually provided by international / global players.

Uganda Logistics Market Overview and Size
Logistics is vital for the economic performance of any economy. Uganda, like other African countries, has structural issues such as logistics infrastructure. In 2018, Uganda has achieved rank 127 in the East of Doing Business Index and rank 102 in the Logistics Performance Index. Uganda Logistics Market has witnessed positive growth over the past few years. The growth was mainly due to the rise in the trade, initiatives by government to develop the infrastructure, technological advancements and emergence of e-commerce sector.

Uganda Logistics Market Segmentation
By Freight Forwarding
The Food and Beverage and Consumer Retail sector played a significant role in the growth of freight forwarding market in Uganda. Uganda being a landlocked country, road freight was the most preferred mode of transportation. Asia flow corridor was observed as the largest contributor in terms of revenue in Uganda freight forwarding market.

By Warehousing
Uganda Warehousing market has grown at a good pace with around double digit CAGR in the review period (2013-18). This growth can be attributed to the rise in the imports and exports, initiatives taken by the government, increase in the number of industrial and business parks, decline in the rental rates of warehouses and technological advancements in the segment. Closed warehouses had a major share in the warehousing market due to the greater demand for these types of warehouses in the country.

By Third Party Logistics Market
For companies whose core business is not logistics it makes a lot more sense to outsource logistics contracts. Ground express dominated the market since it is comparatively cheaper than air express. B2B segment dominated the market since businesses require a limited timeframe within which they want to deliver their items.

Competitive Landscape
The competition within Uganda Logistics and Warehousing Market is highly concentrated in nature with the presence of few international players such as Bollore Transport and Logistics, Spedag Interfreight, Maersk Uganda Ltd., Kenfreight Uganda Limited, CMA CGM Uganda Ltd., DHL International Gmbh and Aramex.

Expansion of industrial activity, emergence of e-commerce, rise in trade scenario and infrastructural developments in the country is expected to impact the market in a positive way. The growth in the future is expected to be owed to the high rate of growth in the courier and parcel and warehousing segments as compared to the dominating freight forwarding segment. The logistics companies are expected to invest on advanced technologies solutions such as autonomous logistics, real-time tracking and automation in order to provide an improved customer service. With the growing international trade, incorporation of advanced technology based solutions will help in an efficient delivery of products by the logistics providers. The largest trigger of the logistics and warehousing market in the long run is the development of infrastructure and construction sector.
